Word Families

This nine weeks we are focusing on short i words. Short i words may be words in the -ig (pig, big, wig, dig, jig, fig), -in (tin, bin, win, din, fin, sin), -it (sit, mit, bit, lit, fit, kit), or -id (lid, bid, mid, rid, kid) word family.

Sing this song with your child to practice the -ig word family.

Sesame Street - Savion and Elmo "Tying Your Shoelace"

By the end of kindergarten your little one should be able to tie their shoes. Practice makes perfect. Here's a video to help your child learn.

Sight Words

It is very important that your little one learns the following sight words. We learn sight words to become better readers and writers. Remember sight words should not be sounded out. They should be learned by sight. Below are sight words we have learned or are learning now:

Sight words we have learned: I, a, we, can, like, to, see, the, you, my
Sight words we are learning this nine weeks: and, it, is, me, yes, no, go, at, am, have, here, an

There are many ways to help your child remember these words:
1. Make flashcards together and practice them every night.
2. Use shaving cream...Spread shaving cream on a table and call out a word for your child to write. They love this technique!!
3. Practice finding these words in books together.
4. Use cooked spaghetti to make the words.
5. Use Play-Doh to spell the sight words.

If you would like more ideas to practice sight words, please contact me. I am here to help!!

Measurement

This nine weeks we are learning all about measurement in math workshop. We have already learned that you can use cubes to find out how long or how wide an object is. Our class really amazed me when they went around the room to measure objects. I heard students use the word "compare" and "measure." We have measured our feet using bears and our pencils using paper clips. Give your child a few items and ask them which object is longer and which object is shorter. Have fun exploring math together.
